Vintage Cellar Review: Markedly tropical, this is a juicy, fruit-forward wine from the workhorse German grape Bacchus. It's sweet in style with a slightly nectar-like unctuousness but balanced by tangerine acidity. Enjoy young.
Flavors/Aromas: (Pg. N/A) This grape is so rare that it's not in the book! Even on the Wine Folly website it has little info. It is a low acid wine most popular in the relatively tiny UK wine scene that is a cross of Silvaner x Riesling and Müller-Thurgau.
My Review: So I may or may not have bought this thinking it was a Riesling. Given that it looks like a Riesling, was right next to other German Rieslings, was specifically described as sweet, and is such an uncommon grape, I am going to give myself some grace on this one. Another commonality between this and the Riesling from several weeks ago: all I could smell at first was straight sugar, and the first taste revealed nothing but SWEETNESS! However, the Bacchus had a unique tangerine taste that caused more of a dampening effect that wasn't as present with the more famous varietal. Additionally, this wine also had a grassy taste that appeared later on, which made me think of a sweeter Sauvignon Blanc! The more I drank, the more the palate expanded, as the flavored acids and sugars interplay in a way that reminds me of the consistency of honey. After this, I am very curious to try a British Bacchus, though I am unsure where I would be able to find one...
