Vintage Cellar Review: In the glass, a brilliant pale yellow reminiscent of white currants; the wine opens with an intense bouquet of gooseberries, feijoas, and ripe tropical fruits. The bright entry of fresh cut grass and preserved lemon lead to passionfruit pot de crème showcasing a long finish of fresh herbs and clean minerality.
Flavors/Aromas: (Pg. 166) New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is notably distinct from other more herbal varietal variations, as it prominently includes notes of tropical fruits like passionfruit and kiwi along with more residual sugar, with further flavors of pea shoot, jasmine, ripe pear, and CAT PEE!
My Review: To be perfectly honest, I mainly wanted to try this for the cat pee, because that seems so stupid yet so intriguing. Regardless of motivation however, I am really glad I picked this wine up, because it was a real treat. The above paragraphs do not lie, and the first sniff and sip were exemplified by tropical flavors of passionfruit, guava, and gooseberry, all in a light package that left my tongue quite dry. Despite that aridity, this wine seemed sweeter that other wines of the varietal I have had, though I assume that is largely the result of the tropical aromas. On the whole, drinking this felt awesome, especially later upon the appearance of sparkling minerality, a bit of dry lemon, and (of course) the fabled cat pee! I have been lucky enough to visit New Zealand before, but armed with my newfound knowledge of wine, I simply have to return as soon as possible!
Food Pairing: I had this with some hard salami, and the nice spice of the meat was brought out more than usual. Add in the tropical fruit hints, and you are left with a delectable snack pairing!
