Vintage Cellar Review: Light cranberry color, juicy strawberry-watermelon fruit aromas, nice mineral, nice lift of spring flowers. Deep pink, light red in color and delivers excellence in flavors. Aromas and flavors of bright cherry cola. - 91
Flavors/Aromas: (Pg. 90) The particular blend is somewhat of an anomaly, but the Carignane grape is typically used in rosé with hints of dried cranberry, raspberry, tobacco leaf, baking spices, and cured meat.
My Review: I figured that I should try blogging about at least one rosé before this class finishes, and luckily I had a chance to taste this one for free at the store before purchasing a well-priced bottle. What started with an aroma of light, flittering strawberry quickly turned into a strawberry-watermelon surprise in the mouth, with some noticeable minerality in the back of the throat. All of this comes together to create a wonderful cherry soda effect as described. The only knock for me would be the weird taste at the back of the tongue, where the drier and more bitter parts outweigh the sparkles. Still, the combination of white acidity and red flavors is simply fascinating, and I would not be opposed to trying more.
Food Pairing: I had this with some Teriyaki Beef Yakisoba, and the combination of the minerality and acidity completely powered through any beef flavor that might have been there. It wasn't bad, but better pairings definitely exist.
